The Picodon region straddles the River Rhone. The department of the drôme lies to the east of the river, and the Ardeche to the West. In the ancient language Picodon means spicy. The climate of the lower Rhône is dry. Mountain grass and shrubs, with strong aromas and flavours, grow short and thick there. The goats that feed on the mountain devour everything, including the shoots and the leaves of trees. Their milk is the basis of this spicy diet. The inside is so dry that that to get the best taste, it is best to suck it. This cheese taste great with a Cotes du Rhone or a Vignerons d’Estezargues.
